TEETH WHITENING

Teeth Whitening Guide
A smile is something you can't give away;
it always comes back to you.

A beautiful white smile is one of the easiest ways to improve your appearance.  And today, teeth whitening can brighten the smile of virtually everyone, including you.
Teeth whitening can be performed to reduce discoloration and staining, or simply to provide you with whiter, brighter teeth. If your teeth are discolored from age, smoking or other stains, you are an excellent candidate for teeth whitening.  Research shows that modern teeth whitening systems are effective for more than 78% of the people who use them.
There are two principle forms of teeth whitening:
  • Teeth whitening kits or systems
  • Professional whitening
Teeth Whitening Kits or Systems
Teeth whitening kits or systems are low-cost alternatives to dentist-supervised professional teeth whitening.  Most teeth whitening kits or systems consist of a whitening gel that is placed in molds that fit over your teeth and are worn for a period of time.
The American Dental Association has granted its seal of approval to some teeth whitening products, so be sure and look for the ADA mark of approval if you are going to purchase a whitening kit.
It is important that the manufacturer’s directions are followed precisely when using an at home teeth whitening kit. You should not use a teeth whitening product for more than 14 days without consulting a dental professional.

Professional Teeth Whitening
Professional teeth whitening under the supervision of your dentist is the most safe and effective method.  There are currently 4 basic methods of whitening; chemical whitening, mild acid whitening, abrasive teeth whitening, and laser teeth whitening.
Your dentist will determine if you are a candidate for teeth whitening and which type of whitening system would provide you with the best results. He will want clean your teeth, fill any cavities, and make sure that your gums are healthy before beginning the teeth whitening treatment.  Complications during professional teeth whitening are infrequent and are usually minor.

Disadvantages and Limitations of Teeth Whitening
Teeth whitening is very effective over the short term. However, it can have disadvantages, such as sore teeth and gums from the bleach.  Your bridges, crowns, bonding, and fillings can only become as white as their original color and will not lighten from further professional teeth whitening.  It is important to consult with a dentist or oral health professional before trying a teeth whitening product because different stains require different teeth whitening solutions.
Because some people have very high and unrealistic expectations, they may be disappointed with the results.  But for most of us, teeth whitening really does create brighter smiles.
